2nd May 2005
Today, after work, when I was getting some food just before going to debating, at about 7pm, Mum rang up my Dad. I was eating my Ali Baba kebab very happily when Dad passed over the phone. I thought Mum would want to talk to me about boring unimportant things, like she normally does, but today was different. She was like "Juan rang today" Now, you must understand, she was saying Juan like it was Kwan, so I had no idea who she was talking about. "Who?" "Juan" Again, it sounded like Kwan, and I was standing there trying to figure out why my science teacher was calling me at that hour of the night. "Who’s that" "Juan, from YFU." Oh, I finally got it. "What did he want?" I was so not ready for this answer.
"Well, he rang up to see if you were still interested in going on exchange." "Yeah, but it’s too late for this year, and I don’t want to go next year coz it’ll bugger up my college education" "He said its not too late, You can still go this year"
This is where I stopped eating and started crying, well, not really crying, but I was so excited, I couldn’t talk for a second and couldn’t breathe properly. I was so so excited. This was amazing! I was walking around Manuka, wearing my work uniform, and eating Ali Baba while talking on the phone, and sounding excited about it. What were the unfortunate passers by to think of that?
Well, then, after a whole lot of conversation with Mum, which ended with dad’s phone cutting out, like it always does, I went to debating. I decided not to tell anyone about it, because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go, or that I was going at all.
I know now.
